Student's Experiences - Days 3-4 (Thursday, Friday)

Day 3 Thursday Oct. 15th

Our third day in Poland was probably the hardest yet. We davened this morning in the Yeshhivat Chochmei Lublin, ate breakfast there and then headed out on a day full of cemeteries and camps. We started with Majdanek, a concentration and death camp. It was a very hard experience, including walking through gas chambers, seeing a barrack full of shoes, and singing in the crematorium. Then we visited an old cemetery in Lublin and saw the Chozeh of Lublin and Rav Shalom Shachneh and the Marharshal. Belzec was next on our list; a death camp which was so successful in its mission, that there is only one recorded survivor. After an exhausting, cold, and depressing day such as this, most of us were extremely drained as Rav Brown tried to get us singing negunim. But after davening in the Tarnograd library, previously a shul, we began to sing. We became so involved in it, it uplifted us all and Rav Brown and Ada had a very hard time getting us all on the bus to leave. From there we traveled to Rav Elimelech of Liszensk’s grave. The Rav asked that whenever people come to visit his kever that they come in simcha with singing and dancing. Miraculously, we sang and danced with an immense amount of ruach for an hour in the dark and snow. It was an amazing way to end a day of death and despair singing and dancing with my new friends.
