Ilana Fodiman SilvermanIlana Fodiman, alumna of 1993, is married to Yair Silverman. They have 3 children, Hadar 4, Adin 2, and Ashira 2 months old. Ilana and Yair moved to Israel from Berkeley California in October 2006, after living there for six years. In Berkeley, Ilana worked as a regional educator for the Hillel's of Northern California and then for the Jewish Community High School of the Bay as the Chair of Rabbinic Literature.
Although Ilana and Yair loved their time in Berkely, when the time came to make a decision to sign on for another extended period, they decided to take a step back and consider their future as well as the question of where they wanted to be lay their family's roots. In Ilana's words, "We decided that if we were to fulfill our vision of living as a family, and a part of the Jewish people contributing to the modern Jewish state - now was the time to jump on board and bring lessons learned to make our contributions."
Ilana and Yair moved to Zichron Ya'akov, a very mellow city with a wonderful breadth of population including many older people who were among the first pioneers to establish the city, immigrants from Romania, Yemen, France, England, the US. Zichron Ya'akov boasts a warm community of people, who are working together to build their dreams of fusing the past, present and future together. Zichron is surrounded by spectacular views with the Mediterranean on one side and lush farm land on the other. It's a beautiful place with depth and charm.
In addition to enjoying the wonders of 3 young children, Ilana is currently teaching in informal individual and group settings, as well as at the senior center in Zichron.
Last summer she founded a summer Beit Midrash for high school girls to participate in full time study of Torah through text and chevruta. They met in the historic Aliya museum in Zichron. Ilana is on a committee of people who have been working to found a Pelech style girl's high school in Zichron Yaakov to insure that the wonderful opportunities of engaged education do not miss the smaller towns. She is also taking part in developing a community model in Zichron Ya'akov which embodies the values of Torah, openness, chessed, and true searching When asked about her memories from Midreshet Lindenbaum Ilana says: "I remember and value the role models that I was exposed to, the teachers, students, and Midreshet Lindenbaum scholars each of whom demonstrated tremendous dedication and love to the pursuit of Torah.
I remember deeply appreciating the maturity and seriousness of purpose in engaging Torah texts to explore ourselves and Torah. The sounds of a Beit Midrash and the depth of the chevruta relationship resonate in my heart and mind. The love of the sounds of people exploring and bringing the entirety of themselves to Torah study which I first heard at ML are certainly what inspired my continuing to study in a Beit Midrash while in college and then at Drisha for nearly 4 years following" |
